Energy company signs option for Commerce Park acreage

FPS staff report

The Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) signed an option agreement that allows for Carroll County Energy LLC to purchase up to 20 acres in the Commerce Park.

During an Aug. 22 meeting, CIC members met in executive session for a half hour and emerged with the option agreement. The land, located on the east side of SR 9 between the Jenkins farm and the Carroll Golden Age Retreat, would allow Carroll County Energy to connect to the Tennessee Gas transmission line which crosses the property.

Carroll County Commissioner Jeff Ohler said the 20 acres is part of a 70-acre parcel and the energy company will require an easement across the remaining property to gain access to a 700 megawatt natural gas electric generating facility planned for construction on the Jenkins farm.
The purchase price is $15,000 per acre.

The CIC accepted the resignation of David Harp, Minerva village administrator, as president of the CIC due to time restraints. Harp has not been able to attend CIC meetings on a regular basis recently. The group has been meeting more frequently to handle business associated with the oil and gas development that is occurring in the county. Gary Hall was appointed to serve as president until officers are elected in 2014.
In other business, the CIC:

-SIGNED necessary documents to transfer mineral rights of land at the Commerce Park to Carroll County Commissioners. It was noted that when the land was transferred to the CIC, the mineral rights were transferred in error.

-AGREED to spend up to $30,000 to repair the floor in the former prosecutor’s office at 11 E. Main St. Commissioners approved an agreement with Digital Works to use a portion of the facility as an inbound call center training site. Commissioners agreed to provide the building and pay utilities in exchange for a guarantee of 12 jobs every 12 months from companies returning inbound call centers to the United States from overseas countries.

-DID not take action on a request from Economic Development Director Aaron Dodds to establish a “pocket park” on county-owned land on W. Main St. that is currently home to a “Quilt Square Park.” CIC members said they felt the matter should go before the Carroll County Park District for consideration.
