Lois E. Ashworth

Lois E. AshworthLois E. Ashworth, age 88, of 320 S. Union Street, Leesville, died early Friday morning, Feb. 21, 2014, in Bowerston Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

Born Sept. 25, 1925, in Carrollton, she was the daughter of the late Harry F. Karns and Florence Gantz Karns Cassidy.

She retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years of service as postmaster for the Leesville Post Office.

A fixture for many years in Leesville, Lois was a graduate of the former Dellroy High School where she was her class valedictorian.  She was a member of Leesville United Methodist Church, National League of Postmasters, and the NAPUS.  She was an active member of the former Orange Chapter Order of Eastern Star.  She was an attentive grandmother and great-grandmother whose favorite advice to her family was, "Each day is what you make it".

She is survived by a son, William H. "Harpo" Ashworth, III and a daughter, Mrs. Joe "Sis" Nign, both of Leesville; two granddaughters, Mrs. Doug (Angie) Bailey of Leesville and Mrs. Travis (Cathy Jo) Ackerman of North Canton; three great-grandchildren, Shawn Bailey and Brandon Bailey, both of Leesville, and Tessa Jo Ackerman of North Canton; two brothers, John (Karen) Evans of Dellroy, and Tom Evans of Palm Bay, FL; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Karns of Bowerston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. "Junie" Ashworth, Jr., whom she married April 5, 1946, and who passed away Nov. 3, 1999; a son, Edward Ashworth; a sister, Mabel Taylor; and two brothers, Harry and Gene Karns.

Graveside services will be conducted Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. in Leesville Cemetery with Rev. Doug Mallernee officiating.  No calling hours will be observed. Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville is handling arrangements.  To leave an online condolence message, visit www.baxtergardner.com.
