Ona M. McCarty

Ona M. McCartyOna M. McCarty, age 96, a Cumberland Road S.W., Sherrodsville, resident, died Friday afternoon, Feb. 21, 2014, in the Sunnyslope Nursing Home at Bowerston following a brief illness.

Born March 29, 1917, in Sherrodsville, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Clara Buxton Gartrell. 

She retired from the former Montgomery Ward Store in the Miracle Lane Plaza at Dover in 1979 after 18 years of service.  She was a 1935 graduate of the former Sherrodsville High School and attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Sherrodsville. Ona was a local fixture who was born, raised, and spent most of her entire adult life in the Sherrodsville area.  She was very loyal to her family and particularly enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She spent her quiet time crocheting and knitting, and made gifts of those projects to many people.  Ona and her husband Austin both enjoyed traveling together.

She is survived by two sons Barry (Teri) McCarty of Carrollton, and Cary (Sharon) McCarty of Dover; her three grandchildren, Mrs. Jerred (Becky) Giauque of Sherrodsville, Mrs. Tom (Brandie) Bertleff of Massillon, and Travis (Tiff) McCarty of Bolivar; five great-grandchildren; and her faithful canine companion,  "Lucky".

She was preceded in death by her husband, Austin C. McCarty, who died Oct. 19, 1992, and two sisters.

In accordance with Ona's wishes, private graveside services will be conducted Feb. 25at 11 a.m. in Leesville Cemetery with Rev. Milo Baker officiating.  There will be no calling hours observed.
