Nancy Bell Cope

Nancy Bell CopeNancy Bell Cope, 81, of Carrollton, died peacefully June 10, 2013, with her daughters by her side at Carroll Healthcare Center.

Nancy was born Aug. 6, 1931, to the late J. Wilbur and Helen Gibson Bell.

She was a 1949 graduate of Carrollton High School and a 1953 graduate of Muskingum College majoring in education. For 20 years she was a substitute teacher for Carrollton Schools and began teaching second grade full time in 1980 until her retirement in 2000. Nancy taught not only how to read and write, but she taught her students how to share, how to love learning and how to be fair. She was not just a classroom teacher; she taught life lessons to those lucky enough to know her. Nancy was a member of Carrollton United Presbyterian Church since 1941.

Her passion for reading and learning paled in comparison to her passion and love for her family. Nancy is survived by her two daughters, Kitty (Tom) Weir and Barbara (Tom) Newbold of Carrollton; a sister Kathryn Brooks; and a brother, James Walter (Carol) Bell of California.

The jewels in Nancy's crown are her grandchildren, Jenifer (Bart) Wilking of Colorado, Chad (Kelly) Lowdermilk and Jonathan (Jessica) Lowdermilk, all of Carrollton, and Jessica Shortland, of Malvern. She has four step grandchildren, Brian and David Newbold and Klint and Bobbi Jo Weir. She was amazed to have lived to know her great grandchildren, Makenna Belle Shortland, and Cael, Cade and Connor Lowdermilk. She had four step great grandchildren, Tanner, Reighly, Tyler and Jayce Newbold.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and a niece, Gina Lynn Bell.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 14 at 11 a.m. in Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4-7 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family would like you to honor Nancy's request by donating to the Bell-Herron Scholarship Foundation, c/o Atty. Sean Smith, 70 Public Square, Carrollton, OH 44615.
