Hall, Susan Grove, 72, passed away on September 21. Susan was born on November 13, 1941, to the late John F. and Jean R. Grove of Cadiz, Ohio. She was a graduate of Cadiz High School, attended Western College for Women for two years, and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. She completed her M.A. at Ohio State University, where she met and married Dennis R. Hall on December 17, 1965. In 1980, Susan completed her Ph.D. at the University of Louisville. She published poetry as well as a wide variety of articles for academic publications. She was an editor of American Icons: An Encyclopedia of the People, Places, and Things That Have Shaped Our Culture.

She has written books on the Civil War’s impact on her ancestral home in Appalachian Ohio, most recently, “The Civil War of East Ohioans.” Susan was a very active member of Highland Presbyterian Church. She sang in the church choir for many years and was a leader in the prayer quilt ministry. A kind and caring wife, mother, and friend, Susan will be greatly missed. Susan was preceded in death by her brother, Michael F. Grove.

Susan is survived by her husband, Dennis R. Hall; three children, Johanna Hall Dickson (Thomas), Jesse F. Hall (Melissa), and Jerome M. Hall (Sarah); and five grandchildren.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Friday, September 26, at Highland Presbyterian Church, 1011 Cherokee Road, Louisville, Ky., 40204. Burial will be at Cadiz Union Cemetery, Cadiz, Ohio, at a later date.
