Pearl Elaine Bower, 94, of Bowerston, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at Park Village Health Care Center in Dover after a period of declining health. Born June 7, 1920 in Saginaw, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late John Russell “Polly” and Hazel Ann (Black) Cogan. She moved to the Bowerston area with her family at a young age and was a 1938 graduate of Bowerston High School. On Aug. 24, 1940,
Pearl married Ernest D. Bower and enjoyed nearly 74 years of marriage with him until his passing on May 13, 2014. She is survived by sons: David A. Bower and John R. Bower of Bowerston; daughters: Carol E. Kaale of Lexington, Tennessee and Nancy E. (Larry) Coffy of Bowerston; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Midge Bower, and great-grandson, Caleb Shreffler.
Pearl was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who was also very active in her community. She was a longtime member of Conotton United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women. She also belonged to the Conotton Valley Garden Club, the Conotton Valley Senior Citizens and the Bowerston First United Methodist Quilters. She worked as a clerk at Penn’s Store in Bowerston and as an office clerk for the Harts Family Center in Schoenbrunn, as well as cooking for the Bowerston Elementary School along with her mother.
Services for Pearl, officiated by Pastor Charles Kettering, will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow in Bowerston’s Longview Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday. Those wishing to honor Pearl’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
