Born Oct. 27, 1930 in Union Hospital, Dover, Ohio. Passed away Jan. 3, at Highline Rehab and Nursing Home, Denver, Colo., with end stage Alzheimer’s. Her parents were John Webster Sherriff and Dorothy Rose Shively Sherriff. She had no brothers or sisters, and grew up at 642 Stanton Avenue, Cadiz, Ohio.
Her father owned Sherriff Signs, her mother was a stay-at-home mom. He enlisted in the Army during World War I and played clarinet in the band. Mr. Sherriff continued to play his clarinet in Cadiz in a small band. He became mayor of Cadiz during World War II for four years. Julie attended grade school, junior high, and Cadiz High School, graduating June 1948, top of her class with Ervin Mason. Her best friend was and is Anna Agapite Crimi, graduated Salutatorian the same year.
She was Y-Teen secretary, and was in the class play her junior year, and was a member of the Classical League, Glee Club, the Honor Society, was class secretary her senior year, and attended the Y-Teen Conference. She graduated with a College Prep Diploma. Her best friends were Anna Agapite, Don Frazier, Virginia Ash McFarlan, Connie Mattern North, and Donna Liming. Julie and Anna Agapite both attended and were in Old Howard Dorm, and graduated Ohio University, Julie with a degree in journalism, Anna with a degree in education. She then worked for the Council of Southern Mountains in service to America for a year; then attended and graduated Michigan State University with a Master’s degree in Mass Communication.
She joined American Youth Hostels, canoed several Ohio rivers, rode a bike to Boston, Massachusetts, traveled to England by ship and rode around parts of England by bike and train, went to Sweden, France, Germany, and stayed in a youth camp in Italy. Her first job was copy editor for a newspaper in a small town in northern Ohio; she was then copy editor for the Columbus Dispatch in Ohio. Then she came to Colorado to ski and edited Cervi’s Business Journal, now Denver Business Journal in Denver before joining the Denver Post newspaper. She next worked at KBTV Television now KUSA, when Gannett Company bought the station. Then she transferred to Gannett Outdoor Advertising Company working until she retired at age 65.
Julie was a member of Cadiz Presbyterian Church with her parents. Later, she joined Washington Park United Methodist Church in Denver. She sang in the choir, was the church office secretary, and a member of the Care Committee, and member of the Missions Committee. She square danced with Fiddlesteppers Singles Square Dance Club where she met Charles Douglas Dana. They both joined Supper Club, a singles club at Central Presbyterian Church where she became secretary and he became program chairman. They dated 1969 to 2006 when she married Doug Dana, and they remain married to this day.
She was cremated at Horan and McConaty Funeral Home in Denver. Her ashes have been interred in Cadiz Union Cemetery with her parents, as will Doug Dana, her husband.
