Richard E. Matthews, 80, of Deersville, passed away on June 7, at Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia. Born May 20, 1936 near Deersville, he was a son of the late George Henry and Lovera Ellen (Stone) Matthews.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army, and upon returning home from his service, he began his career with Zimmerman Patient Care and retired after 27 years with the company. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in Freeport F. & A. M. Lodge 415, a member of Scottish Rite of Cambridge, and a member of both the Uhrichsville Eagles and Moose. Richard enjoyed collecting old motors and going to old motor shows. He was attended Deersville United Methodist Church and also was a Franklin Township Trustee for 16 years.

On March 22, 1958, he married the former Doris Jean White with whom he recently celebrated 58 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Rick (Barb) Matthews and Jeff (Barb) Matthews; grandchildren, Lucas, Curtis (Leah), Drew (Danielle) and Zachary Matthews; great-grandchildren, McKinsey, Jennifer, Lindsey, Wyatt, and Chase; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Bob, Samuel, and Ronald Matthews, Janie McMullen, Florence Gleason, and Janet McCue.

In keeping with Richard’s wishes, he is being cremated without services. He will be interred in Deersville’s Patterson Union Cemetery. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Community Hospice, in lieu of flowers. R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home, Inc.
