MALVERN – The Malvern Lady Hornets jumped out to an early lead in the season opener and never looked back, posting a 49-31 win over the St. Thomas Aquinas Knights Nov. 25.
Malvern junior Kelsi Hulit kicked off a 10-0 run with a break away layup from the tipoff. Jasmine Goldsworthy, Hunter Martin and Tara Tucci scored during the run. Hulit topped off the run with a pull up jumper.
A pair of free throws by Goldsworthy gave the Hornets a 12-2 lead. Tucci sank a shot from behind the arc, to extend Malvern’s lead to 15-2.
The Lady Hornets finished off the opening quarter with a 21-7 lead.
Malvern took a 30-14 lead into intermission.
Martin and Tucci each recorded a three-pointer in the third period. Susan Thompson sank a two-point jumper for the winners, giving them a 38-18 lead entering the final frame.
The Lady Hornets recorded 11 points in the fourth stanza, six of which came from Hulit. Tucci tacked on two points and Martin added a three.
Tucci finished the contest with 12 points, including two three-pointers while going 2-for-2 at the free throw line. She also tallied three rebounds and four assists.
Martin recorded 10 points for the winners, had six steals, four boards and one assist.
Goldsworthy and Thompson each pulled down five rebounds.
Malvern finished the game 11-for-14 (79%) at the free throw line.
The Lady Hornets will host the Strasburg Tigers Dec. 3. JV begins at 1 p.m. followed by varsity.
