Lady Lions qualify three relay teams for state track meet, Cardinal falls short


ATHENS – Three Minerva relay teams qualified for the state track meet during regional competition at Athens last week.

The Lady Lions 4×200, 4×100 and 4×400 teams all qualified. The 4×200 team, consisting of senior Emmelee Markins, junior Ava Burman and sophomores Amanda Kukunis and Alyssa Markins, placed second with a time of 1:45.37.

The 4×100 team, comprised of Alyssa and Emmelee Markins, senior Ashley Gulling and Kukunis, placed second in a time of 49.99.

The 4×400 team, made up of junior Ava Burma, sophomore Sarah Carver, freshman Skylar Trussell and Kukunis, placed third with a time of 4:09.26.

Other regional competitors for the Lady Lions included junior Mackenzie Scott, sixth, and Jenne Daulbaugh, seventh, both in the 3,200; and sophomore Nelle Yankovich, fifth in the 800.

The Lady Lions finished in third place with 39 points, behind Carrollton (70 pts.) and Indian Creek (40 pts.).

For the Lion boys team, the 4×400 relay team, comprised of seniors Carl Fritz, Cody Mullins and Wyatt Kohl and sophomore Jason Williams, placed sixth with a time of 3:35.12. Williams placed fifth in the 200 meter.

Hallie Sciury, a long jumper for Sandy Valley, placed fifth with a distance of 17’6.5 inches.
