A fire that caused extensive damage to a modular home Jan. 3 started on the back porch, according to Carrollton Village Fire Chief Tom Mesler.

Fire Canton RD
Firefighters from three departments used ladders in an attempt to extinguish a fire that spread to the attic area of a Canton Rd. home from the back porch Sunday evening.

Mesler said his department was toned at approximately 9:30 p.m. by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department to respond to a “back porch fire” at 4162 Canton Rd.

“When we arrived the fire had spread to the rear wall of the home and into the attic area,” Mesler said. “A steel roof had been installed on the home over the original roof so it was a challenge to get to the fire in the attic.”

Firefighters from Carroll County and Great Trail Joint Fire District assisted at the scene.

Firefighters remailed on the scene until about 1:15 a.m. Monday.

The home, owned by Steve and Melissa Phillips, was covered by insurance. Mesler said they are staying with family members and did not request assistance from the American Red Cross.
