Five new teachers will greet students when classes begin Aug. 22 in the Southern Local School District.
They include Kyle Exline, who will teach English 7-12; Kordan Wrask, math 7-12; Jessica Hall, intervention 4th grade; Andrew Vulgamore, intervention middle school, and Victoria Nuske, math 7-12.
All students will receive a free breakfast and lunch this year due to a federal grant received based on enrollment figures, according to School Supt. John Wilson.
Although the 2017-18 enrollment figures will not be available until after the opening of the current school year, Supt. Wilson anticipates they will be about the same as last year which were 887 students in K-12.
Events planned this Thursday, Aug. 17, include 7th grade orientation at 4 p.m., a Back to School Bash at 5 p.m. and Meet the Team at 7 p.m.
Kindergarten and preschool orientation will be held Aug. 23 with preschool orientation set for Aug. 28. Both will be held a 1:30 p.m. to help welcome youngsters and prepare them for their educational experience.
“We will give parents information about the school district and handbooks, including safety rules for children who ride a school bus, which will be explained by District Transportation Director Robert Marra,” Elementary Principal Kristy Sampson said.
First day for kindergarten students is Aug. 24 and first day for preschool is Aug. 29.
Starting and dismissal times for junior-senior high school students are 7:40 a.m. and 2:28 p.m. Elementary classes begin at 9 a.m. and dismiss at 3:20 p.m.
